What to look for
- A kiln-dried hardwood frame with mortise-and-tenon or doweled joints is the whole game. Engineered wood and staples will loosen within a decade.
- Eight-way hand-tied springs still outlast sinuous (S) springs, though a heavy-gauge sinuous system in a good frame is fine and much cheaper.
- Aniline and semi-aniline leathers patina; pigmented and 'bonded' leathers wear through to backing. Bonded leather is not leather in any useful sense.
- Ask whether cushions can be re-stuffed and the piece reupholstered. Made-to-order American furniture usually can be, which is why it lasts generations.
