- Stitch density is durability: closely quilted layers hold batting in place for decades, sparse quilting lets it shift and thin.
- Cotton batting breathes and gets softer; polyester batting insulates more per ounce and flattens permanently.
- A separately applied, doubled binding is repairable when it eventually wears — a folded-over backing edge is not.
- American quilting survives as a small-mill craft, so ask whether it is machine-quilted domestically or hand-finished. Both are legitimate, at very different prices.
