- Waxed cotton duck is measured in ounces — 15 oz and up is pack weight, lighter is a day bag. The wax is renewable with a bar of dressing.
- Check for a leather-reinforced bottom and bar-tacked strap anchors. Straps tear out at the anchor, never in the middle.
- Solid brass hardware will not rust or seize; plated zinc will, and it is what fails on cheaper packs.
- Waxed canvas is water-resistant, not waterproof, and it prefers a re-waxing every few years to any kind of washing.
