What to look for
- Chrome-vanadium or chrome-molybdenum alloy, properly heat treated, is what keeps a wrench from spreading on a stubborn fastener.
- Look for a full-polish finish — it is easier to wipe clean, and the polishing step reveals forging flaws the maker would rather hide.
- Off-corner (flank drive) box ends grip the flats instead of the corners, which is the single biggest anti-rounding improvement in modern wrenches.
